Officials: Central Illinois day care worker has monkeypox | Health and Fitness

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A central Illinois day care worker has developed monkeypox but it has not spread to others at the center, public health officials said Friday.

The worker at the unidentified day care in the village of Rantoul was in isolation and doing well, officials said. Screening of children, other workers and their close contacts was in progress, The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported.

“We hope there are no kid cases,” said Julie Pryde, director of the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District. “But for all we know, the employee could have gotten it from a kid.”

The Rantoul case is Illinois’ first monkeypox case linked to a day care, Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Lauri Sanders said. The monkeypox virus spreads through prolonged skin-to-skin contact.

Strength Training for Vegans Is Key to Bone Health. Here’s Why

  • A plant-based or vegan diet has known health benefits, but it may also adversely affect bone strength.
  • A new study investigated the role strength training plays in the bone health of people who follow a vegan diet.
  • The researchers found that vegans who regularly performed resistance exercises had better bone micro-structure than vegans who did not engage in resistance training.
  • Study findings suggest that people who adhere to a vegan or plant-based diet should perform resistance training regularly to preserve bone strength.

A vegan or plant-based diet is a dietary lifestyle that avoids all animal-based foods, including meat, dairy, eggs, and often honey.

Plant-based or plant-forward diets are rising in popularity, particularly veganism. A 2018 news report estimates the number of people in the United States identifying as vegan increased by 600% between 2014 and 2017. What’s more, the Good Food Institute reports that plant-based food sales increased from $4.9

New Yorkers Warned of Possible Community Spread of Polio | Health and Fitness

Physician’s Briefing Staff

FRIDAY, Aug. 5, 2022 (HealthDay News) — New Yorkers who are not vaccinated for polio should get their shots, state public health officials warned Thursday after the virus was found in seven wastewater samples in two neighboring counties.

The finding comes after an unvaccinated adult in Rockland County last month became the first person known to be infected with polio in the United States in a decade. Officials also found the virus in wastewater samples in neighboring Orange County.

“New Yorkers should know that for every one case of paralytic polio observed, there may be hundreds of other people infected. Coupled with the latest wastewater findings, the department is treating the single case of polio as just the tip of the iceberg of much greater potential spread,” New York Health Commissioner Mary Bassett, MD, said in a statement. “As we learn more, what we do know is

Indiana becomes 1st state to approve abortion ban post Roe | Health and Fitness

By ARLEIGH RODGERS – Associated Press/Report for America

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana on Friday became the first state in the nation to approve abortion restrictions since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, as the Republican governor quickly signed a near-total ban on the procedure shortly after lawmakers approved it.

The ban, which takes effect Sept. 15, includes some exceptions. Abortions would be permitted in cases of rape and incest, before 10-weeks post-fertilization; to protect the life and physical health of the mother; and if a fetus is diagnosed with a lethal anomaly. Victims of rape and incest would not be required to sign a notarized affidavit attesting to an attack, as had once been proposed.

Annual physical fitness tests are a cornerstone of military life. Each service has its own take on the once-a-year assessment required by the Department of Defense.
