Slovak government loses its majority after partner withdraws | Health and Fitness

AP

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Slovakia’s political crisis has deepened after a junior partner completed its withdrawal from the governing four-party coalition, leaving Prime Minister Eduard Heger without a parliamentary majority.

Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok, Justice Minister Maria Kolikova and Education Minister Branislav Gröhling, all from the liberal Freedom and Solidarity party, submitted their resignations on Monday. They followed the example of the party leader and former Economy Minister Richard Sulik, who resigned from his government post last week.

Heger said Monday that he was planning to introduce candidates for the four empty ministerial posts to President Zuzana Caputova, but gave no further details.

Freedom and Solidarity previously said it wasn’t willing to stay in the government because of disagreements with Finance Minister Igor Matovic, a populist leader whose Ordinary People party won the 2020 parliamentary election.

Teens More Likely to Vape If Parent Smokes | Health & Fitness

MONDAY, Sept. 5, 2022 (HealthDay News) — Parents who smoke should know that their kids are more likely to vape and try smoking.

Those teens were 55% more likely to try e-cigarettes than those of nonsmoking parents and 51% more likely to have tried traditional cigarettes, according to a large study out of Ireland.

It also found that the percentage who have tried vaping is rising dramatically. Boys are still more likely than girls to do so, but the number of girls who have smoked is growing.

“These findings are worrying, not just for teenagers in Ireland, but for families all around the world,” said Dr. Jonathan Grigg, head of the Tobacco Control Committee of the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

“We know already that children of parents who smoke are more likely to take up smoking. This study suggests that teenagers are also influenced by smoking parents to start using

AP

BEIJING (AP) — China has locked down 65 million of its citizens under tough COVID-19 restrictions and is discouraging domestic travel during upcoming national holidays.

Across the country, 33 cities including seven provincial capitals are under full or partial lockdown covering more than 65 million people, according to a tally published late Sunday by the Chinese business magazine Caixin.

It said that outbreaks have been reported in 103 cities, the highest since the early days of the pandemic in early 2020.

Despite a relatively low number of infections, authorities have adhered to a “zero-COVID” policy requiring lockdowns, quarantines and the confining of people suspected of being in close contact with any confirmed case.

China recorded 1,552 new cases in the latest 24-hour period across a nation of 1.4 billion people, the National Health Commission reported Monday.

In findings published Sept. 2 in JACC: Case Reportsdoctors in Portugal described a 31-year-old patient with monkeypox who developed acute myocarditis about a week after his other symptoms started.

The authors used CMR mapping, an imaging tool, to help with the myocarditis diagnosis, she said in a journal news release.

Lawsuit Claims Amazon’s Top-Selling Mattress a ‘Health Hazard’ | Health & Fitness

TUESDAY, Aug. 30, 2022 (HealthDay News) — Customers who bought a bestselling mattress sold on Amazon and at retailers nationwide are suing the manufacturer amid claims that fiberglass fibers in the product have damaged their health.

Zinus, Inc., is fielding multiple lawsuits over its “Green Tea Mattress.” Among the claims is a proposed class-action lawsuit led by a California woman who is representing several thousand people.

“It’s not hyperbole to say that this has ravaged thousands of individuals’ lives from across the United States,” James Radcliffe, a personal injury lawyer with Cueto Law, told the Los Angeles Times.

Radcliffe’s firm started a 2020 lawsuit on behalf of Amanda Chandler and Robert Durham of Illinois, who said they spent months in a hotel and paid more than $20,000 in professional mediation services after a Zinus memory foam mattress purchased at Walmart for their child contaminated their home with fiberglass in 2019.

CA lawmakers approve mental health care plan for homeless | Health and Fitness

By JANIE HAR and ADAM BEAM – Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will establish a new court program to steer — even force — homeless people with severe mental disorders into treatment after lawmakers on Wednesday gave final approval to a proposal pitched in March by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The Senate unanimously agreed to changes approved in the Assembly late Tuesday, despite objections from civil liberties advocates who fear it will be used to force unhoused residents into care they don’t want.

Newsom said in a statement that passage “means hope for thousands of Californians suffering from severe forms of mental illness who too often languish on our streets without the treatment they desperately need and deserve.”

Homeless people with severe mental health disorders often cycle among the streets, jails and hospitals, with no one entity responsible for their well-being. They can be held against their will
